A major gangland figure has been shot outside a gym in north Co Dublin.
Brian O’ Reilly – who was the right-hand man of slain crime godfather Eamon ‘The Don’ Dunne – was shot three times outside the Platinum gym in Balbriggan shortly after 11am.
Sources said that O’Reilly was shot twice in the chest and once in the arm.
He remained alive at the scene after the attack but was then rushed to Beaumont hospital. He is expected to survive.
Gardai are appealing for information. The gunman is described as having dark hair and he is believed to have left the scene in a white-coloured Nissan 200 SX or a white-coloured Toyota Supra.
O’Reilly is one of the country’s most feared criminals and he previously survived an assassination attempt in August, 2010, when a gunman fired shots at him in an attack at a pub in Bettystown, Co Meath.
O’Reilly, who is originally from Ballymun, is a major target for specialised garda units ,including the Criminal Assets Bureau, and he was previously given a suspended sentence for violent disorder which was linked to a bitter north Dublin feud in 2000.
The 45-year-old was regularly spotted in the company of Eamon Dunne and even helped carry his coffin at the gangster’s funeral in May 2010.
His activities with Dunne made him a target for the Alan Ryan’s Real IRA mob, who were the chief suspects for the Co Meath gun attack on August 7, 2010.
There was a large garda presence at the Platinum gym at Balbriggan Retail Park this morning as investigators attempted to hunt for the gunman behind the latest attempt on O’Reilly’s life.
O’Reilly, who claimed that he is a used car dealer, was in the security business with Eamon Dunne.
Both were directors of a company called Shelneart Security Ltd.
In September, 2012, gardai found the gun that was used in the 2010 attempted murder on O’Reilly when the Special Detective Unit raided a house in the Tallaght area.
Apart from being friendly with Eamon Dunne, O’Reilly was also close pals with veteran crime godfather Eamonn Kelly, who was shot dead in Killester in December 2012.
He is also mates with burly thug Derek McLoughlin who also lives in Balbriggan and survived a gun attack in May of last year himself.
