Maiden voyage for Geldof's tribute award to his sailor dad
A NEW sailing award in memory of Bob Geldof's late father was given its maiden voyage at the weekend.
Conor Ryan (17), from Dalkey, Dublin, was riding the crest of a wave after the former Boomtown Rats frontman presented him as the inaugural winner in recognition of his sailing achievements to date.
Bob Geldof snr, who died two years ago at the age of 95, was a life-long sailing fan and founding member of the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club (DMYC).
Liam Owens from DMYC says the memorial award comes at a fitting time as the club is anxious to recruit new members to its ranks.
"Bob was a founding member of our club back in 1965 and always encouraged and nurtured young people who wanted to gain experience and enjoy our sport."
He says the organisation has shifted focus to "affordable sailing" and stresses owning a boat is not a prerequisite to being able to take part. "We want to encourage more people to embrace the sport. . . new members do not need to have their own boat and existing members are always delighted to welcome newcomers to crew on their boats".
