A LITTLE boy had a miraculous escape last night when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he played with friends near his home, writes Niall O'Connor.
The nine-year-old was playing on the road shortly before teatime near Dillon's Cross, Cork, when he was struck by a car.
He was knocked into the air and suffered a fracture to one of his legs, but amazingly gardai said last night that his injuries were not life-threatening.
The driver fled the scene.
Emergency services responded and treated the young boy before taking him to Cork University Hospital. His family were with him last night. "He had a lucky escape – it could have been much worse," said a source.
Gardai at Mayfield are investigating the incident and have appealed for witnesses.
