TWO people were "extremely lucky" to have escaped without serious injury after their car was left hanging off a motorway - with a drop of more than 30ft to a road below.

Firefighters were called to the M6 near Haydock, Merseyside, just after 8.30am yesterday.

"When we arrived, the back of the car was overhanging part of the bridge, but the car was relatively stable and pretty level. We had to use winches and cables to secure the vehicle before the two occupants could be helped out," an emergency services spokesman said.

HYDRAULIC CUTTERS AND A SAW WERE USED TO REMOVE THE DOOR OF THE CAR TO FREE THE DRIVER.

Meanwhile, motorists in parts of south Dublin and Wicklow were faced with several fallen trees during Saturday night's gusts.

Drivers on the N11 had a lucky escape when a tree came crashing down on the busy road. And a large fallen branch has been removed from the Kilternan Rd just outside Enniskerry.
