Loyal TDs hope for committee positions

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny will have only a limited number of €10,000-per year committee posts to dole out to coalition TDs who missed out on a ministry, writes Michael Brennan.

The new Government has pledged to reduce the number of committees -- currently standing at 20 -- which means there will be fewer posts on offer.

The jobs are worth €10,000 per year extra to the holders on top of their Dail salaries.

Mr Kenny will be under pressure to look after supporters like Tipperary South TD Tom Hayes and Roscommon-South Leitrim TD Frank Feighan.

The Programme for Government promises "radical reform" of the Dail -- with a new committee structure at the heart of this. There is widespread agreement that many committees had become talking shops -- and lacked any real powers.

The Government has promised to give the committees new powers to introduce legislation.
