Low note for Aras ceremonies

OCCASIONS in Aras an Uachtarain just wouldn't be the same without the presence of a finely tuned and working piano.
But a sour note was struck after the resident Bechstein Boudoir grand piano at the Aras was founded to be decidedly off-key following a musical health check.
The verdict created a flap in official circles. "The matter has now become urgent because if an order is not placed immediately a further six months will pass before we can expect delivery," a state memo warned in February 1980.
Musical order was eventually restored in June 1980 when a memo noted that the new piano had been delivered.
