Long-term unemployed men dominating the dole queues – CSO

THE NUMBER of people on the live register rose slightly in October but the figures also show that the number of male long-term claimants increased by 21pc to 22,265 in the year to October.
By comparison, the equivalent increase in the number of females was 9,000, a 25pc hike, bringing to the total number of people on the dole for a year or more to 32,165 – a 22pc increase, according to the latest Central Statistics Office.
There are now 430,432 people on the live register but the level has remained in a relatively narrow range of between 13.9pc to 14.5pc during 2011.
According to the CSO, while there are fluctuations on a monthly basis the trend has been relatively flat over the period.
