GARDAI have arrested a 60-year-old man in connection with an explosive device planted on a Ballina-to-Dublin coach on Monday night.
The device, which was viable and described as a sophisticated pipe bomb, was left in the luggage compartment.
An anonymous call was made in Longford and gardai stopped the coach in Maynooth and evacuated the 30 passengers and driver.
An Army bomb disposal unit set off a controlled explosion to destroy the device.
Following a detailed investigation, the suspect was detained in Longford yesterday, where he was still being questioned last night.
Gardai are satisfied he had no connections with dissident republicans but was known as a loner, who had been questioned about previous incidents.
He will now be questioned about a possible link to other bomb-alert calls, which turned out to be hoaxes.
