A lollipop lady and a number of school children narrowly avoided serious injuries after a car drove through a stop sign this morning.

The school warden was helping children cross the R403 road between Allenwood and Carbury in north Kildare when the incident occurred.

Road Safety Officer for Kildare County Council Declan Keogh said the children and lollipop lady could have been "seriously injured or worse".

"The school warden had to jump out of the way as the car went straight past her. The kids were on the footpath waiting for the warden's signal. Another few seconds the warden and the kids could have been seriously injured or worse," Mr Keogh said.

The safety officer said the incident was "worrying".

"This is not an unusual occurrence. The school warden can be seen as a nuisance to drivers who are rushing to work but they have an important job to keep kids safe.

"Children are entitled to be safe crossing our roads."
