A LOTTERY jackpot win worth close to €9m sparked a flurry of frantic ticket-checking at a local newsagent yesterday.

Colin Mullins, owner of First Chapter newsagents at the Golden Island Shopping Centre in Athlone, Co Westmeath, said a steady stream of customers were obsessively checking and re-checking their tickets yesterday after it emerged that the single winning quick pick ticket worth more than €8.7m was bought at his shop on Wednesday.

"Everyone is checking their ticket -- and checking it twice," he told the Irish Independent last night. But the identity of the lucky ticket holder still remained a mystery when he closed up the shop last night.

"No one has come forward yet," he added.

But speculation was rife that Ireland's latest lotto millionaire was a local resident, he said.

The jackpot has been rolling over since Wednesday May 9 and ranks 18th biggest in the history of the Irish lotto.
