Spike Island is now at the centre of a bitter row over a controversial pedestrian causeway aimed at making it easier for people to access Ireland's newest tourist attraction.

Historian Dr Michael Martin, who operates walking tours of Spike Island, said it has the potential to become the biggest tourism development in Ireland for a generation.

However, locals in the Cork harbour town of Cobh are worried that such a bridge will cost them vital revenues by diverting tourism traffic from other parts of the town in the long term.

Spike controversially closed as a prison eight years ago.
