A PUBLICAN, who had planned on retiring after her 80th birthday, has decided to stay on after being inspired by US President Barack Obama's upcoming visit.

Julia Hayes runs a tiny public house from her front room on Moneygall's Main Street in Co Offaly.

She has run the bar since 1987 -- and she barely has a wrinkle. "It keeps me young. I don't feel half my age," she told the Irish Independent yesterday.

Moneygall residents joined Mrs Hayes and her husband, Joe Hayes, on Thursday to celebrate her 80th birthday.

"It was a great night. I got the shock of my life when I saw everyone. I had four or five cakes," she said.

Mrs Hayes described Mr Obama as a "very handsome" man. She also hopes to share some of her local knowledge about Mr Obama's ancestral links to Moneygall.
