Live register figures flat but long term claimants higher
Unemployment figures showed signs of bottoming out today with a 0.1pc increase recorded in July, according to the Central Statistics Office.
But the number of long term claimants increased by over 45,000 in the year to July bringing those who have been on the register for a year or more to 40.4pc of the total.
There were 470,284 on the Live Register in July or a rate of 14.3pc.
But the year-on-year increase overall increase was 3,460 – significantly lower than the 34,403 figure recorded this time last year.
In the year to July 2009, the number was as high as 194,191 or an 81.5pc hike.
While the unemployment rate is a significant headache for the Government, according to the CSO the figures have remained flat since May.
