Liffey puts on good show for triathlon
THEY swam, they biked, they ran.
One of the country's largest triathlons saw more than 930 people brave the murky waters of the River Liffey not long after dawn yesterday.
Competitors for the Dublin City Triathlon completed a 1,500m swim before cycling for 40km and running for 10km around the Phoenix Park.
"It all went very well, the weather stayed good. There's a huge buzz around," a relieved race director, John Wallnutt of Piranha Triathlon Club, said after the last competitor had crossed the finish line yesterday.
Contrary to popular perceptions, Mr Wallnutt said the Liffey is a lot cleaner around the Phoenix Park than when it reaches the city centre.
"People do get a bit worried about the Liffey but once they swim in it they say the water is fantastic -- and with the run and the cycle in the park, the atmosphere is fantastic," he said.
