A SPECIAL Leaving Certificate centre has been set up on the Mediterranean island of Malta to cater for Libya-based students who cannot do the exam at home because of unrest.
A number of Libyan students have also arrived in Ireland to sit their papers. It is not known how many will take up the option of doing it in Malta.
The tradition of offering the Leaving Certificate in Libya goes back to the 1990s when the International School of Martyrs for the children of diplomats wanted an internationally regarded exam and selected the Irish system.
This year, 66 Libyan-based students entered to sit the Leaving Cert.
