Legislation delayed for months
THE new legislation allowing for limited abortion where a pregnant woman's life is at risk will not become effective for several more months.
The legislation was passed in July but more work needs to done before a commencement order can be signed, Health Minister James Reilly confirmed.
"I would hope the work will be finished before the end of the year," he said.
The Department of Health must set up a panel of doctors who would be involved in decisions where a pregnant woman requests a termination of pregnancy on grounds of suicide.
It must also provide administrative back-up.
