Legendary saxophone player Cole will take to the stage for charity concert

THE great Paddy Cole will be among the acts at a gala charity concert in Birmingham Symphony Hall tonight.

The concert, 'Bob Brolly and Friends', is in aid of charity and Brolly signed up the legendary Irish saxophone player after seeing him playing in Tenerife. Also on the bill is the legendary Basil Henriques Band, and the programme will be broadcast by BBC Midlands.

Paddy, who is one of Ireland's best-known musicians, has a busy schedule. Among his projects in the coming weeks is playing at a gig to celebrate the 50th anniversary ball in Dromoland Castle; this Friday, July 5, he plays the Bellewstown Races; and next Sunday, July 7, he does his usual slot at the annual Vintage and Classic Car show in Terenure College, Dublin.

JACOBS TO KICK OFF 10 MARATHONS BID

THIS Thursday, July 4, paediatric occupational therapist Denzil Jacobs begins running 10 marathons in 10 days to raise €10,000 in aid of the Saplings Special School for Autism in Graiguecullen, Carlow, where he works.

Flogas, Chill.ie and Optical Sciences have sponsored his singlets and donations can be given into the school or online via www.mycharity.ie/event/ denzils_doing_it/.

FUN FOR THE FAMILY AT GARDEN PARTY

Today, Gardenworld Kilquade has the perfect Garden Party with a cooking demonstration by Neven Maguire, wine tasting with Paolo Tullio and gardening advice courtesy of Gerry Daly – meanwhile, the kids can enjoy marvellous magic, music and funny face painting.

CHARITY SCREENING OF 'THE SMURFS 2'

A special charity screening of The Smurfs 2 in aid of Variety, the children's charity, takes place in The Odeon Cinema, Point Village, (beside the O2) on Sunday, July 28, at 2pm. JACKSON LAUNCHES WRITING ANTHOLOGY

Journalist and author Joe Jackson has put together an anthology of selected writings from the Sunday Independent, including A Song For My Mother, which was published in 2009. As well as a new introduction, he has added a eulogy, written when she died on January 9, 2013, and described by Joe Duffy as "very moving".

HURLEY AND OMAN SING THE HITS

A unique evening of spiritual, gospel and pop hits sung by the great Red Hurley with soprano Sandra Oman plus special guest choirs takes place on Saturday, September 21, at the National Concert Hall, Dublin; Sunday, September 22, at Cork Opera House; and Friday, October 4, at UCH, Limerick.
