Leaving attic trapdoor open will help prevent burst water pipes

LEAVING the attic trap door open and keeping an eye on water pressure should help homeowners to avoid burst pipes when the snow begins to thaw.
Water pipes rupture when the snow and ice begins to melt, but tips including leaving the heating on a timer when away and putting a piece of carpet over the external stopcock should help minimise the risk, Aviva insurance said.
"While the snow is already down it's not too late to protect properties," spokesman Alan Gurhy said. "We are also advising consumers to move items such as electrical goods, light furniture and paintings to avoid water damage."
Other tips include wrapping a towel around outside taps and leaving a light on in the attic to generate heat.
