Leave is at discretion of commanders
EVERY member of the Defence Forces is technically on duty every day of the year. They work a variety of hours, over a range of different days and do different jobs, depending on the needs of their commanders.
Annual leave is not automatic and holidays are only granted at the discretion of the commander.
Officers work a five-day rostered week but are often called to perform extra duties outside these hours.
Commanding officers engage unit-recall plans up to six times a year, where all officers are recalled to barracks at short notice, even if they are on holidays.
Permission to travel abroad on holidays has to be given in writing.
