The attendance at the party to mark the departure of the Department of the Taoiseach secretary general included former taoisigh John Bruton and Brian Cowen, and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny was away on the night in late July as he was attending an EU summit in Brussels on the eurozone debt crisis.

After the customary speeches, the 200 partygoers were treated to an extravagant spread of Italian food in the Italian Room of the building -- all paid for by Mr McCarthy himself.

Cabinet ministers Phil Hogan, Dr James Reilly, Paul Kehoe and Attorney General Maire Whelan were also present, along with Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett.

Former Fianna Fail ministers Noel Dempsey, Mary Hanafin, Pat Carey, Dick Roche and John Curran were also in attendance.

The guest list also included British Ambassador Julian King, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly, RTE director general Ed Mulhall and many members of the social partners.

Speaking in Mr Kenny's absence, Mr Gilmore said only two things would keep the Taoiseach away from the gathering -- "the first was a European Council meeting and the second was a Connacht football final".
