Laundering warning as IR£126,000 exchanged
IRISH punts worth a total of €160,242 were exchanged by the Central Bank on a single day last year, new figures have revealed.
A TD yesterday called for a date to be set for an end to the Central Bank's punt to euro exchange service, amid concerns over money laundering.
The amount, equivalent to around IR£126,200, was exchanged on November 9 -- however the bank could not clarify whether it was the result of a single transaction or numerous transactions.
Labour TD Kevin Humphreys told the Irish Independent that although he had no evidence of criminal activity, the amount was suspicious 10 years after the changeover.
