THE country's latest Lotto millionaire didn't realise he had won more than €5m until he came across a newspaper article on the win almost a week later.

The winner, from Derry, wishes to remain private. He travelled to Dublin yesterday to collect his cheque for €5,482,894.

He said he discovered his good fortune only after reading an article in the 'Belfast Telegraph'.

"As I read through the article, everything just added up for me. A €12 ticket -- check, bought at Top Filling Station -- check, Quick Pick -- check," said the winner.

"When I finally checked my ticket, I couldn't believe my eyes. It's surreal -- amazing but surreal," he said.

The delighted winner bought the lucky €12 Quick Pick ticket in Top Shop, Top Filling Station, Killea, Co Donegal, on Friday, January 20.

It is the third jackpot winning ticket sold in Co Donegal in less than two months.

The winner of a ticket worth just over €4m has two months to claim their jackpot.

The winning ticket for the New Year's Eve lotto -- which was sold at Chawke's newsagents in Castletroy, Limerick -- has not yet been presented at the National Lottery headquarters. The €4 quickpick ticket must be presented by March 31 next.

Twelve jackpots worth just over €11m have gone unclaimed from the National Lottery.

The biggest unclaimed winning ticket -- for almost €3.5m -- was sold in 2001 in Coolock, Dublin.
