RAIL commuters in Dublin will benefit from a late-night DART service this Christmas for the first time in more than a decade.

Iarnrod Eireann plans to run trains across five nights, and fares will remain the same.

If successful, late-night trains could be extended to other commuter routes for Christmas 2014. The decision followed an online survey that indicated "strong support" for the service.

The trains will operate on December 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21.

The 00.30 will depart from Pearse, serving all stations to Howth. The 00.35 will also depart Pearse, serving all stations to Malahide. There will also be a 00.30 from Connolly, serving all stations to Bray.

But the DART won't run to Greystones because additional costs would be incurred.

Dublin Bus will run a full Nitelink service on the following dates: December 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 27, 28, 31 and January 3 and 4. There will also be a 00.30 and 2am service on December 12, 17, 18 and 23.

There will be no service on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Fares for the Nitelink are €5 on the Leap card or €6 cash.

Alternatively, tickets can be purchased for €5.70 from shops.
