Avril Doyle has pulled out of the Presidential election, leaving the Fine Gael field to Mairead Guinness, Gay Mitchell and party blow-in Pat Cox.
She admitted she entered the race too late Party insiders felt she had too much ground to make up .
Ms Doyle told Independent.ie: ‘‘I have decided to withdraw from Saturday’s selection convention to allow my supporters to focus on the three remaining candidates. I think this is in the best interest of the Fine Gael party’’.
And she added: “Having come into the race late, and being a realist, I now realise that I am unlikely to secure the nomination, not withstanding the fact that I retain the support of a sizeable number of the party nationwide.
“I am not going to disadvantage any of the three remaining candidates by endorsing one in particular. The candidate of choice will have my full support’’.
The former Wexford TD stood down from the European Parliament at the last Euro elections.
She only entered the presidential race on June 21.
