Lack of transport for ill infants

MANY critically ill infants cannot be moved overnight to bigger maternity units offering intensive care and treatment because of the lack of a 24-hour transport service.
A new study, carried out by the Department of Neonatology in the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, estimated that around 50 babies could be affected annually.
The National Neonatal Transport Programme, which provides the service, is only funded to handle travel between 9am and 5pm.
More than a third of calls occur in the first hour of service in the morning. The study said there was a clear need to fund it around the clock.
