A security man was left shocked and traumatised after being robbed at knifepoint by up to a dozen people in the Phibsboro area of Dublin.

The incident happened as he was opening the access gates to a park at Blessington Basin on the Royal Canal Bank West in the north of the city at around 9.30am yesterday morning.

He reported being attacked by up to 12 people who threatened him at knifepoint.

Gardai are investigating if a firearm may also have been used to threaten the man, who is in his mid 20s.

He was held down on the ground and his own personal wallet was taken from his back pocket during the incident.

It is understood the gang that carried out the attack were aged between 25 and 40, and not Irish natives.

The victim does not carry handle money in his daily work and as such investigators are perplexed as to why he was targeted by such a large group.
