Keyhole heart op successful
A 67-YEAR-OLD woman is recovering following pioneering keyhole surgery.
Harriet Gould, from Co Carlow, underwent the procedure at Dublin's private Blackrock Clinic. It was the first heart surgery of its kind here.
In a day-long operation, a medical team, led by consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Michael Tolan, repaired two of her heart valves using the procedure, which involves a smaller incision than traditional surgery, meaning less post-operative pain, a lower risk of infection and also a much shorter hospital stay.
