Taoiseach Enda Kenny is going to pass up the chance to take up a top post in Europe, European Affairs Minister Paschal Donohoe says.
Fine Gael is hosting the pre-European elections conference of its EU grouping, the European People's Party, in Dublin.
Mr Kenny's name is again being linked with the role of European Council President when it comes up in the Autumn.
Speaking at the National Convention Centre, Mr Donohoe said he believed Mr Kenny was staying put.
"My view is that he is staying. I genuinely believe that he is absolutely committed to ensuring this Government continues with its work to support and complete our recovery.
Even though we have made progress last year with the creation of 60,000 jobs - it is nowhere near enough.
"I know he is strongly committed to seeing this work and has indicated now on a number of occasions he wants to lead this Government and Fine Gael into the next general election.
“And I believe that's what is going to happen," he said.
