TAOISEACH Enda Kenny is expected to consult with Fine Gael backbenchers before making a decision on holding a gay marriage referendum.
The Cabinet will discuss the matter next week.
The Government has to signal it's intention after the Constitutional thinktank recommended a referendum be held.
The four months for considering the recommendation is now up.
Fine Garl sources say the issue will be discussed at a meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party before a decision is taken.
Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore is pushing for gay marriage referendum in 2014.
Mr Gilmore is seeking to have a gay marriage referendum as early as next year or in spring 2015.
But no agreement has yet been reached with Fine Gael, where Mr Kenny has still declined to give his own views on gay marriage.
