Kenny in debt talks with EU allies

Fiach Kelly

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny insists he will raise the issue of a deal on Ireland's crippling banking debt with other EU leaders at two European summits.

Mr Kenny is attending a meeting of the European People's Party (EPP), the centre-right grouping to which Fine Gael is aligned, in Bucharest before he travels to Brussels for a full EU summit later today.

Although the issue of Anglo-Irish promissory notes, with another €3bn due to be paid by the taxpayer in March, is not on the agenda at the Brussels or Bucharest summits, Mr Kenny said he would raise it with other leaders in one-on-one meetings.

Mr Kenny will also raise the issue with Angela Merkel at the EPP summit.
