Taoiseach Enda Kenny has branded the "lapgate" scandal involving his party colleague Tom Barry "unacceptable".

Condemning what has been described as sexist behaviour to have invaded the Dail recently, Mr Kenny also criticised Senator David Norris for his "absolutely disgraceful" remarks towards a female TD.

Mr Barry, a Fine Gael TD, was forced to make a grovelling apology at a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday after he infamously grabbed his colleague Aine Collins by the hips and pulled her on to his knee during a late-night debate in the Dail.

"I found it completely unacceptable," Mr Kenny said of the incident last week, which made headlines around the world.

"Deputy Tom Barry apologised at the parliamentary party of Fine Gael to all his colleagues and to deputy Collins. He said this will never happen again. He was entirely apologetic to all his party colleagues on his action."

Elsewhere, former presidential candidate Mr Norris was branded a "sexist" after he accused Fine Gael's Regina Doherty of "talking through her f****" about the abolition of the Seanad.

The Taoiseach said: "I found the remarks by Senator Norris disgraceful in the Seanad. Absolutely disgraceful."

The gay and human rights campaigner withdrew his comments earlier this week, admitting his language had been "intemperate".

He said he wished to put them in context, saying he was "incandescent with rage" at the time.

Mr Norris was heavily criticised after he made a play on the Vagina Monologues to attack Ms Doherty's calls for the abolition of the Seanad, saying he should not have to listen to the "Regina monologue".
