Taoiseach Enda Kenny has indicated the North-South interconnector may be part of the investigation into pylons.
The future of the project running through Meath, Monaghan and Cavan is now in doubt as a planning application is due to be made in three weeks time.
But the status of the North-South project is not at all clear.
The project was not included in the work to be undertaken by a new independent commission.
However, Mr Kenny now says he wants it to be examined, so it can be factored into the decision to be taken by An Bord Pleanala.
Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte will meet with the commission later this week and see if the work can be extended to the North-South Interconnector.
Mr Kenny said the public would be very reassured in a similar exercise can be undertaken in each area.
"I would hope the extension of remit for the same type of analysis can be extended to North-South," he said.
