Eamon Gilmore, left, was at the UN yesterday while Enda Kenny expressed his regret at Ms Shortall’s decision.

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has defended Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore as rows break out in the Labour Party over the Budget.

Mr Kenny said he was "happy" Mr Gilmore and the Labour ministers were focused on the job of sorting out the country's problems.

"The Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, leader of the Labour Party, is absolutely focused with the Fine Gael party in Government, as a national government, to deal with our nation's problems that we received a mandate to sort out in respect of which we have signed up for a Programme for Government.

"Internal matters of any party belongs there.

“I am very happy that the Labour Party leadership, the Tanaiste and all his ministers are focused on dealing with sorting out our problems, restoring a sense of structure to the way we do business, providing opportunities for investment for job and careers. That's where the future prosperity of our country lies," he said.
