Taoiseach Enda Kenny has appointed a new Senator from Galway – in the wake of two Oireachtas members from the county losing the whip over the abortion legislation.
Fine Gael general election candidate Hildegarde Naughton has been appointed to fill the vacancy in the membership of Seanad Eireann caused by the resignation of Martin McAleese back in February.
Ms Naughton, who is a primary teacher, has served as a member of Galway City Council since 2009, and was mayor of the city in 2011/2012.
Mr Kenny paid tribute to Ms Naughton’s track record.
“Throughout her political career to date, Hildegarde Naughton has been a very capable and committed representative of the people of Galway. She will be a very constructive and successful member of the Seanad and I wish her well in her new role,” he said.
