Keeping Donal's memory alive

IN the immediate aftermath of Donal's passing we are being inundated with requests to associate his name with good charitable events.

Donal has three charities, the fundraising for which we are currently permitting and promoting with the organisations, namely Kerry General Hospital palliative care unit, Care 4 Kids at Kerry General Hospital, and Crumlin Medical Research Foundation (CMRF).

At this stage we are aware of at least €100,000.00 being contributed in his name to CMRF, doubling what was there prior to his death. Galbally RFC in Co Limerick has a "bungee jump for Donal" on June 22 which hopes to raise in excess of €10,000 for the teen room in St John's Ward Crumlin, while the combined colours day in eight Limerick secondary schools raised in excess of €7,500. The family endorse the Kerry Group Golf Classic for Crumlin which is to be dedicated to Donal into the future.

Over the summer, Killarney Summerfest is now dedicating three key elements to the local palliative care unit and Care 4 Kids at Kerry General Hospital.

It will be recognised as Donal's #LiveLife Weekend and will incorporate a star-studded Summerfest ball, the Teddy Bear's Picnic and a junior cycle along the lines of the "Ring of Kerry Cycle" but a bit shorter. Full details will be announced shortly, with plans to make sure these events become a central focus to summer in Kerry.

September 12 sees the CROSS rugby legends Malin to Mizen Cycle hit Donal's home area. It is hoped his school will be host to the legends, including the Wallace Brothers, Mick Galwey and many others to answer questions from Donal's school friends.

Later that evening they hope to co-host an "Evening with the Legends" with the support of the west Munster rugby clubs in the Gleneagle Hotel.

On Friday, September 13, I will lead a cycle from Tralee RFC, joining the legends on the way to cross Donal's mountains up to Molls Gap. This cycle is in aid of CROSS rugby legends cancer research fund and details are being finalised on the web page www.crossdonalsmountain.ie while going to press.

To register go to http://crossdonalsmountain.com/register.

Later in September it is hoped to have a special golf and auction ball gala, currently under negotiation.
