Keane pulls out of race to be new HSE boss
FORMER national cancer tsar, Professor Tom Keane, has withdrawn from the race to become the new head of the Health Service Executive.
It is understood Prof Keane has removed his name for consideration for the post. He was the preferred candidate to take over the role from Professor Brendan Drumm when his five-year contract finishes in August.
The Dublin-born professor had been head-hunted from his post in Canada to oversee a major reform of the cancer services. Prof Keane returned to Canada in November when his two-year posting as interim national director for cancer control finished.
He was understood to have the backing of Health Minister Mary Harney to take over the role.
