BOXING hero Katie Taylor had her eyes on a gold medal yesterday after finally securing shower and toilet facilities in the newly refurbished gym where she trains.

After five years training in a gym without a toilet or shower at Bray Boxing Club in north Wicklow, a business owner has provided thousands of euro to fund proper facilities for Ireland's brightest hope for a gold medal.

Businessman Paddy Mallon, owner of Mallon Sausages in Co Monaghan, stumped up €7,000 so that Katie can train in suitable facilities as the four-time world champion prepares for the biggest battle of her life at the London Olympics next month.

A government grant of €24,000 allowed refurbishment of the club house but was not enough to provide a toilet and shower. The extra cash provided by Mr Mallon will allow Katie to make the best possible preparations for the Olympics.

"As a boy, my father had a great interest in boxing and Katie's plight really hit the heartstrings. Given that she didn't have proper facilities despite all she's done for Ireland, we thought it wasn't right," said Mr Mallon.
