Katie Taylor made a special appearance last week to help kick off celebrations for SPAR's 50th birthday in Ireland.
The Olympic hero was at the SPAR Retailer Convention in Killarney where more than 200 retailers from around the country gathered for the launch, an event officiated by TV's Miriam O'Callaghan.
"This is a momentous occasion for SPAR and who better to mark our golden anniversary than Ireland's gold medal hero," said Leo Crawford, CEO of SPAR operators BWG Group.
"She's an inspiration, and like her ambition to be best, our retailers too have an ambition to ensure SPAR is the best convenience retailer in the world over the next 50 years and beyond."
Founded in the Netherlands in 1932, SPAR came to Ireland in 1963 following the merger of six separate wholesalers, which resulted in SPAR becoming the first group to cover the 26 counties. The first shop to convert to SPAR in Ireland was the Ralph brothers in Artane, Dublin, which still operates as a SPAR today.
