The seasoned traveller and former ‘No Frontiers’ presenter believes the initiative can tap into the enormous goodwill Ireland enjoys abroad and give the country a much- needed boost.

“Because of my involvement with No Frontiers over the years, I always saw myself and the crew as sort of ambassadors for Ireland,” she said.

“It never ceased to surprise me just how interested people are in Ireland and how much Ireland is on the global stage. Everywhere we went we met people who wanted to talk about Ireland and who had a connection and an interest in Ireland.”

Thomas made her comments in an interview for the Irish Independent’s magazine The Gathering, which is published in today’s newspaper. In a publishing first – the fantastic 32-page glossy magazine comes alive as an exciting digital publication on any PC, smartphone or tablet device.

She believes The Gathering will also provide an opportunity to repair Ireland’s somewhat damaged tourism reputation in recent years. “There has been a knock in our reputation for friendliness. There has been price hiking.

“It’s not going to change the world but it will create good feeling that will emanate back out of this land again and that can’t be underestimated.”

Today’s Gathering magazine is an unmissable guide to next year's national tourism drive which aims to bring thousands of extra visitors to Ireland.

Readers can use the glossy publication to get immediate access to an interactive version of the specially commissioned Irish Independent magazine.

The 'iMagazine' will include video and audio interviews with those backing the event including Ronan Keating and musician Bressie. Also included are extra picture galleries, social media links and a chance to win Aer Lingus flights to bring loved ones home.

And readers will next week get to enjoy two more iMagazines – complementing our annual 'Mistletoe' Christmas publication and 'The Legends' – an unmissable list of the 50 greatest Irish footballers of the past 50 years as chosen by our sports writers.

The three iMagazines will be available for free on any make of smartphone, tablet or PC.

The 'i' versions will be between 45 and 60 digital pages and feature extra material such as video, audio and picture galleries – all linked to the printed content.

The Gathering – the event organised to encourage visits to Ireland in 2013 – already has almost 2,000 organised events and the magazine will show how you too can get involved.

On Wednesday, November 28, readers can enjoy interactive and print versions of 'Mistletoe' – the popular Irish Independent Christmas magazine packed with festive fashion, food, gift ideas and shopping tips. On Monday, December 3, we will publish 'The Legends'.

Getting access to the iMagazines is simple; readers need only type a web address or scan a special QR code printed on the cover.

Independent News & Media trialled the technology in September when it published an eight-page magazine on the 2012 Allianz Business to Arts awards. A 24-page digital version, with the extra content, was available on the same day.

'The Legends' magazine will explain how our panel, which includes Johnny Giles, picked their favourite Irish players.

iMagazine readers can then watch a movie of Giles and the Irish Independent panel making their deliberations – and have their say in a special online poll.
