Journalist stays silent on O Se tribute

Published 13/02/2013 | 04:00

A SPORTS journalist has remained tight-lipped about an internet furore over a tribute he penned to Kerry football great Paidi O Se.

'Irish Examiner' sports editor Tony Leen wrote a moving piece about the former Kerry player and manager following his untimely death last December.

However, his piece was inspired by a paean the award-winning 'Sunday Time's' sports journalist and author, Hugh McIlvanney, wrote about the late former Celtic and Scotland manager, Jock Stein, after his death in 1985.

The similarities between the two pieces sparked a furore on various sports websites and an article in 'The Sunday Times'. Mr Leen, a Kerry native who is also deputy editor of the Examiner, was unavailable for comment last night.
