KEITH Buckley, pictured, estimates he has saved €6,500 a year by switching to e-cigarettes and enjoys huge health benefits from giving up normal cigarettes.

The Dubliner was smoking 40 cigarettes a day, and though he wanted to give up, he never believed he'd be able to manage even one day without smoking.

However, two years ago, he saw an ad for e-cigarettes in a Londis store. To his amazement, he was able to switch completely overnight.

He has reduced the nicotine content but said he still brings his e-cigarette everywhere so he can have a quick puff.

He spends around €4 a week on liquid and around €84 a year on equipment, adding up to around €300 a year in total.

That compares with the €6,900 a year he'd be spending if he was still smoking normal cigarettes.

"I feel brilliant because there's no wheeziness in my chest any more, I don't smell like an ashtray and I can do exercise, go for a swim or whatever, whereas when you're smoking you just don't have the motivation to do that," he said.

Many smokers have followed his example, while his sister and her husband have also switched to them and since given up nicotine altogether.
