Mother of brave Alex (10) thanks Independent.ie readers for 'amazing' support
'My mum was right to tell me my dad took his own life,' Alex told Ireland AM
The mother of Alex Featherston has taken to Facebook to thank readers of their story for the overwhelming support.
Alex appeared on Ireland AM where she spoke about her feelings that children should be "told the truth" when a parent takes their own life.
Her mother, Joanne, took to Facebook last night to thank everyone for their positive messages following the publication of their story.
"Thank you all for your support, really means a lot" she wrote.
"It's so lovely reading through the comments... the amount of support shown to me and my family has been amazing".
Father-of-three Andy Morgan tragically took his own life on New Year's Eve 2010, when Alex was six.
Joanne originally told Alex her father "had a heart attack", but later told her the truth. Despite her 10-year-old daughter's insistence that it was the "right thing" to do, Joanne acknowledges it wasn't easy.
"I feel very blessed to be able to help others. It wasn't what I signed up to do... but I've accepted it and can move forward with peace and gratitude in my heart".
The mother-of-three, who set up the Andy Morgan Foundation to 'spread the message of hope' to those who have experienced loss as a result of suicide, added that she wishes to "shine a light to those who are in darkness".
"We can all help in the simplest way of smiling at a stranger... because you never know long it's been since anyone has smiled at them".
Joanne wrote that she was very proud of her brave daughter for speaking out on such a sensitive issue.
"I want to bring my children up so they never judge, and to have compassion."
"Today I am one proud mother".
