IT was probably the last thing she thought would happen when she was making her submission to the Oireachtas communications committee – but Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has become a viral sensation.
The committee was discussing the abuse of social media when the Galway Senator made her submission.
She was discussing the difficulties parents have keeping up with their children online when she said: “Take for example the form of fraping – where you’re raped on Facebook, where a youngster has their status open and another person puts a message on there as if they wrote it.
“That message could be for example sexual, and that goes out into the world as if they said it – this type of thing has to stop”, she said.
The Senator called for controls to be put in place to stop ‘fraping’ occurring.
She then said: “What about sexting? Where they are texting sexual images.
“Now I heard recently that’s a criminal offense”, she warned.
The clip of the Seantor’s contribution has gone on to become a viral sensation on social media, clocking up almost 30,000 views since it was uploaded two days ago.
