AN Irishman will spend more than eight months in an Australian jail for assaulting a bouncer.
Diarmaid Dooley (28) was at Scruffy Murphy's bar in central Sydney when the incident took place on November 10 last year.
In the video footage shown to Magistrate Jane Culver in the Downing Centre Local Court, Dooley could be seen punching the victim in the face and kneeing him in the stomach outside the premises.
Dooley pleaded guilty to the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, and was given a sentence of a minimum of eight months.
He told the court that he has no recollection of the incident as he was intoxicated at the time. It has been reported that Magistrate Culver said that the court needed to show that this kind of behaviour would not be tolerated.
His lawyer told local media that Dooley was "devastated".
He is set to appear in court in February to appeal the sentence.
