The 19-year-old man from north Cork, named locally as Greg Long, is thought to have drowned after falling into the pool at the Apartamentos Buensol in Torremolinos in the Costa Del Sol.

Mr Long was travelling with a large group of friends and family as part of a celebratory 40th birthday trip.

It is believed his mother Trish had also been travelling with him for the celebrations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is providing consular assistance to the young man’s family.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 7pm yesterday.

A hotel worker is understood to have pulled Mr Long out of the water with the help of a receptionist after diving in to rescue him.

Paramedics tried to revive him when they reached the scene but could do nothing to save him.

Police are probing the circumstances surrounding the death but sources today said everything was pointing to a tragic accident.

It is believed that Mr Long fell into the deep end of the swimming pool and was unable to pull himself out.

A post-mortem was due to take place at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Malaga.

Staff at the apartments where the tragedy occurred declined to comment.

The complex is a short walk from La Carihuela Beach in Torremolinos and features two pools, one for adults and one for children, as well as a solarium and gardens.

Local police confirmed the tragedy had occurred and described it as a tragic accident.

“An Irish tourist has died from suspected drowning at the swimming pool of a holiday apartment complex in Torremolinos,” a spokesman said.

“The circumstances are still being investigated but everything is pointing to the death being the result of a tragic accident.

Locals in Mr Long’s hometown of Rylane have expressed their shock at what had happened.

Fianna Fail councillor Bob Ryan said he knew the family and that the young man was known to be very popular.

“He has brothers and sisters and the family is very popular in the area, it’s an awful tragedy,” he told the Herald.

Mr Long, a graduate of Coachford College, was a keen footballer.

School pals were among the group that travelled to the Costa Del Sol with the young man.

The young man’s girlfriend, who was not in Spain, was said to be devastated after hearing of the tragedy last night.
