Irishman dies in Australia explosion
AN IRISHMAN has died following an explosion in a shopping mall in Perth, Australia.
An eyewitness, also from Ireland, described the chaos which ensued outside the Morley Galleria shopping centre following the early morning blast.
It is understood the cause of the explosion was a power transformer which exploded just after 9.30am local time.
A 30-year-old man died at the scene, while three other men were rushed to the Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition, suffering from serious burns.
A second man died hours later from his injuries. All four men were employees and subcontractors of High Energy Service Pty Ltd, and were carrying out routine electrical maintenance at the time.
Construction worker Jonathan McDonagh, who is originally from Dublin, said he was driving in the area when he spotted three people running from the building.
He was among several people who helped the injured, using his shirt to try and put out the flames.
