An Irishman who was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a young girl in Colombia was arrested thanks to a citizen's tip.

The 50-year-old man was arrested last Friday evening by police in the upmarket El Poblado district in Medellin.

A police spokesperson said the Irish national was allegedly sexually assaulting the minor when a person in the building became aware of the incident. Members of the Policia Nacional raided the property where they discovered a 19-year-old local woman taking pictures of the man carrying out the alleged sex attack.

"Through a citizen's tip-off, units captured a woman (19) and a man (50), of Irish nationality, who were in the company of a 12-year-old child performing sexual acts," the spokesperson said. The Irish national and his female accomplice have since been handed over to the public prosecutor's office, where they are being investigated for the sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14.

The man was paraded before a media briefing on Friday evening where a number of items including a camera, mobile phones and condoms were also laid out on a table.

Colombian authorities have not yet released the man's identity as the matter is still under investigation.

The victim has since been placed into foster care while authorities attempt to locate her family.

However, officials have not yet been able to contact the child's relatives.
