A group of 23 Irish and British holidaymakers on a pleasure boat trip to see dolphins two miles off the popular Gran Canaria resort of Puerto Rico had a narrow escape when the boat they were in caught fire and capsized.

The tourists were rushed to the back of the vessel as fire, caused by a short circuit, engulfed the engine room.

Irish holidaymaker Patrick O'Connell, from Dublin, said: "It was a frightening experience and one I never want to repeat. I was praying things would turn out okay. At one point we were worried the boat was going to explode."

Five holidaymakers were treated for minor injuries at local hospitals and health centres after rescue boats brought them ashore.

The stricken boat they were on -- a yacht called Liberty -- sank within five minutes of the drama.
