Jack McHugh (16) from Corofin in Co Galway was left critically ill following a swimming accident in Munich last week.

The teenager had been on holidays in the German city visiting relatives when the tragedy occurred.

Following the accident he was being treated in hospital but sadly passed away on Tuesday.

He is survived by his parents Declan and Mary McHugh and two younger sisters.

A post mortem examination is to be carried out in the coming days and the family are making arrangements to have the young teen's remains brought home.

The teenager had attended St Jarlath's College and was a keen hurler. He had played at all levels underage up to current Under 16 grade with Corofin GAA Club.

A special mass had been held in Corofin last week to pray for his recovery.
