Irish households among best in EU for recycling
IRISH households are recycling the equivalent of 16 wheelie bins of rubbish every year, making Ireland among the best in the EU.
The figures, compiled for Repak, show that each household sent 144kg for recycling last year and a total of 644,000 tonnes of packaging was recycled.
Ireland is now ranked eighth out of 27 EU member states and has exceeded its EU packaging recycling targets, two years ahead of schedule.
"Even taking into account a dip in the weight and volume of packaging offered for recycling, Repak, with the assistance of other stakeholders, has maintained Ireland's recycling rate of 65pc for 2009," Repak chief executive, Dr Andrew Hetherington said.
